Douglas Kellner
Professor of Education, George F. Kneller Professor of the Philosophy of Education at UCLA's Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, Distinguished Professor, Professor of the Philosophy. Author, critical theorist. He is an American academic who works at the intersection of "third generation" critical theory in the tradition of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research, or Frankfurt School and in cultural studies in the tradition of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, also known as the "Birmingham School".
Douglas Kellner is engaged in an ongoing exploration of the disciplines of cultural studies and the philosophy of education, examining the relationships among technology, education, and society. Utilizing print literacy as a focus for literacy skills, he emphasize the need for other basics in education, including media literacy and computer and information literacy, to better enable students to read and creatively interact with emergent technologies such as the Internet. Douglas is the author of a comprehensive range of books on social theory, politics, history and culture.
He also has contributed important studies of alter-globalization processes, and has always been concerned with counter-hegemonic movements and alternative cultural expressions in the name of a more radically democratic society.
Kellner has written with a number of authors, including (with Steven Best) an award-winning trilogy of books on postmodern turns in philosophy, the arts, and in science and technology. He is known for his work exploring the politically oppositional potentials of new media and attempted to delineate what they term “multiple technoliteracies” as a movement away from the present attempt to standardize a corporatist form of computer literacy.
Previously, Kellner served as the literary executor of the famed documentary filmmaker Emile de Antonio and is presently overseeing the publication of six volumes of the collected papers of the critical theorist Herbert Marcuse. At present, Kellner is the George Kneller Chair in the Philosophy of Education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He is Co-editor of the new Berg Press journal Cultural Politics. Editor of series for Guilford Press; review manuscripts for University of Minnesota Press, Sage Press, Routledge, Yale University Press and others.
Kellner received the 2008 American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Critics’ Choice Award for his book Guys and Guns Amok: Domestic Terrorism and School Shootings from the Oklahoma City Bombing to the Virginia Tech Massacre.
